Artnotes: Seeing Things New

I don’t want to see new things, I want to see things new – a sort-of-quote by unknown photographer.

DESPERATE for a thing to inspire me, and yes it must be a little new, we drove to Sestola, an hour “up” from Roccamalatina, to see a floral festival.  On the advertisement, they featured a flower petal carpet on the street.  We got there – streets were cordoned off and we walked at least a kilometer from the car up to the event floral carpet.  I had in mind Rose Bowl floats, Pasadena and all, but there were just flower sales stands:  no floral carpet.  The flowers  were very nice, goods affordable, and we bought a marvelous planter full of different colored striped petunias, soon to be immortalized in paint.  We made the best of things, visited a fellow with a female Spinone, dirty beige, drooling disgustingly.  We mentioned our spinone hated water; stating the obvious, he said his hated baths, too.

Berlino would not come on the trip because it involved the car, in which he was transported to the vet on Friday.  Despite maybe 500 trips in the car where he didn’t go to the vet, this digression resulted in his boycotting the vehicle (he wouldn’t even walk by it this morning on his walk).  He has to go back to the vet on Monday, but hopefully by July, he’ll be able to get in again and go on vacation.   He is like an old superstitious person who won’t do something because once, just once, it didn’t go the way he planned.

Dogs are really like people – some have great lives, others less so.  I watch dogs on Instagram.   My favorite is @haveyoumetclyde , a dog similar to Berlino, who runs free and has a wonderful life (the owner: it’s you who decides how large your dog’s life will be).   The other one, on the other side of the world, is @abba78629, an Indian mutt who receives massages and belly rubs in a less than pristine apartment in India.    Clyde has clearly never been let loose near the garbage truck, the bain of Berlino’s existence – Berlino goes wild when he sees them and doesn’t even know his own name.   I’ve never seen Abba in the wild.  To put them in perspective, Clyde has 22K+ followers, Abba 10K+ and I have 355.   My instagram address is:  @lauriepessemier

Which makes me think if I attributed my artwork to Berlino, the rescue Spinone, I could get a lot more followers.   Just think of it, Berlino with a paintbrush standing beside a still life; or a “self portrait”.   I am going to try it.

My sales are fair, but not selling like when I was a young attractive bohemian selling to the moneyed public.  Who buys a painting from an old lady with white hair? I was going to use a photo from years past, but now I am thinking the painting dog is better.   We’ll start on Monday…  Kind of like seeing things new.
