Artnotes: A Lot to Sniff

We drove down to Stimigliano this week.  A friend here turned 62 and there was a little gathering in his honor.    It was a good way to ring in September as well, which should prove to be a cooler month than August.   It is certainly hotter here than it was up North.   And even though the temperature is now moderately similar, I believe this southern land absorbs and holds the heat longer.  Like wine earth (did I tell you how I could smell the distinct scent of the dirt when were in the Cahors, France region?), which smells of its fruit.

Meanwhile, our water heater stopped working.  A friend here asks, “why do you need hot water?”  To wash dishes I tell her.  Lying in bed this morning, I realize like so many people here (are they all lacking hot water?), she uses disposable plastic dishes.  As the cog turns, I think people might not have hot water because nobody will fix or install the boiler here in town.  For the want of a nail, the kingdom is lost.
Our dishes are piling up!!!!   Actually, this is the beautiful Palazzo where we ate dinner last night -- and I painted the picture of the people on the balcony...
We have called the person who installed our water heater, in 2017, who acted like we had a helluva nerve calling on him, he referred us to someone else; who said, no, I don’t work on that machine; another said he might be in touch on Monday; finally the Sicilian handyman (is that a contradiction in terms?), who said, yes, it’s broken; and sent us to a man who just might arrive today.   We went to the hardware store to inquire, but they sent us to Riccardo, number two in our list.   Take heart, we have a final option, who will soak us heavily but get the job done, probably with the first guy we called.  With him, no matter the nature of the work, it’s either 700 or 1200 euros.  Mostly, we don’t make any repairs or improvements.

That’s how things are here in Italy – it’s suprising anything gets done at all.  Fortunately, there are many other marvelous aspects of life here – like our dinner party in the palazzo down the street. It was a mix of Australian, English, American, Italian and French people – fourteen of us around a long table, watching the sun set (thank you, Mother Nature) in the West.    Everyone is cheery, says hello, how is it going.  Berlino actually likes it better here in Stimigliano, too – more people to pet him, and lots to sniff.
