Artnotes: Not out of the Question

This week has slipped away into the computer:  I am making a virtual gallery exhibition to start on 10 August.   I am entering our artwork, as well as guest participants contributing images of “Breaking Bread:  Fine Art Around the Table.”  I am eager to launch  – it is an extension of our brick-and-mortar store, Gallery 959 in Rocca Malatina, Italy, but with 10 times the wall space (and potentially a few thousand times the traffic).

I have also been rather lacking in artistic inspiration this week.  I have many ideas, but due to summer temperatures, insects, and crowds everywhere, I haven’t been able to implement much.  Computer work activates a different part of my brain – my thinking becomes linear.

My trip to Munich (Monaco di Bavaria, in Italian) is still very fresh in my mind.  I painted the garden of the art museum, Lenbachhaus, from a photo I took.   But one the thing which impressed me about the Blue Rider painters was that they took inspiration from children’s artwork.  Children, who see things for the first time, have fresh eyes that record what they see in a unique way.  You know the type:  sideways windows, stick arms and legs, big pink heads, flowers. Sitting in the accountant’s office yesterday, I had to admire her son’s collage drawing.  I was tempted to pluck it off the wall.  I am looking for children’s drawings which might inspire me, but it’s not something one finds easily.   Maybe this is a hint to those of you who kept your very young kids drawings to place them in appreciative hands*.

I really would like to go someplace new to paint, so I could see with new eyes.  In just the 36 hours we spent in Munich, I noticed new light, different ways people moved, restaurants with benches.  We are hoping to go to Switzerland in October to see what we can see.  I like to go to places we can drive to:  we can carry paints and Berlino, and stop wherever we’d like.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t include Africa or much of Asia, although Istanbul is not out of the question.
