This was one of the most meat-eating weeks of my life.   With friends, we sampled salumi (charcuterie, or dare I say cold cuts?)  from various regions of Italy.   By Wednesday night I was ready for a vegetarian supper, pesto and tortelloni, salad and tomatoes.

The best meats were in Castiglion Fiorentina, a town between Arezzo and Cortona, in Tuscany.  We went there because our friend bought an apartment, and we are going to outfit it for him:  beds, sheets, dishes, towels.   We also sold two paintings to him, for the bare walls.  We’ll paint (in the big sense), and buy lamps and tables and chairs:  the basics.  The salumi plate had delicious meats from the Florence region (includes beef), served with a toasted homemade brown bread, and honey.  The wine, selected by our waiter, was delicious.

We had the meat plate as a starter  at Vescovio, where I had a fish perfectly grilled on the open fire, and chicoria.   The prosciutto and coppa were delicious, too, with a slightly different  take than the Tuscan fare.

My preferred salumi plate was at Casperia, a town just twenty minutes from Stimigliano.  It wasn’t the meat, while very good, that sent me, but the pickled eggplant.  I think it must have been a white eggplant, as the outside seemed the same color as the interior, but with speckles.  There was also a shredded zucchini, which likewise showed up with lemon in my pasta dish.  Really yummy.

We ate one night at our neighborhood house/restaurant, again with a meat plate – I always like this one, because they include a pepperoni-like slice made by someone in Sabina.  This was bit like kielbasa, but with a more Italian flavor.

The week wrapped up with pizzas at daLina, where we didn’t have a meat plate, but tartare Black Angus.  Berlino liked that one the best.
