Large Crow Fall Berry Laurie Fox Pessemier  Acrylic on large paper (arrives rolled)  56 x 36"  142 x 9y 2cm  375.00 A trip to Venice is always nice – Tuesday was one of those glorious deep blue days, sky and water shimmering.   We sat on the back deck of the vaporetto and met the nicest people from San Antonio, Texas.   They really wanted to talk about life away from the USA.  They loved to travel, but hated being away from their family.   I felt the same that day – we left Berlino at home, and I feel sad doing things without him.   Never mind he’d likely trade me for a hamburger. We were in Venice  to check out the Architecture Biennale there.   We are working on a project, “ReuseIT”, to renovate a ruin near Bologna.  I thought we should bone up on current architectural ideas, terms and presentation.  In fact, the show was rather a bust – it struck me like an end-of-the-school-year project.   The photos and presentations I’d already seen online of these projects were superior to the real thing, in all cases.       Blair Pessemier  acrylic/canvas  15 x 18"   37 x 45cm   475.00     This was also the least crowded I’d ever seen Venice.  There were very few people on the vaporetto, and even less at the show.  I had a bench all to myself in the park where I sat sketching people (I dropped out of the architectural tour).  It was the first time I really noticed that parts of Venice are never visited, and other parts generally overrun.    The best part of the day was a very good lunch at a little restaurant near Giardini.  Fall Nuts  Laurie Pessemier  acrylic/canvas   12 x 16.5"    30 x 42 cm   195.00 Being in that part of Italy made me rethink my idea to document the Danube into a project to document the Po, the longest river in Italy.   The Po starts as a small spring in the Piedmont and irrigates the grand plain of Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia Romagna.  It floods the rice fields (think risotto), welcomes migrating birds and spawning fish, and dumps into the Adriatic.  I look for motorboats to facilitate parts of the trip.  In the Fall   Laurie Pessemier  acrylic/canvas   12 x 16.5"    30 x 42 cm   195.00 It’s quite cool here in Roccamalatina right now.  The heat is running, the door open for the convenience of Berlino.   I hear different birds than I did in the summertime.  They are cutting trees next door to us – trying to save what they can of the umbrella pines.  The air is mildy foggy, but the sun still comes through all sparkly, and creates sharp color and shadows.   We are going to a birthday luncheon today, featuring Indian food.  Blair is making dessert. 4 drawings 5 x 8"  12 x 24cm  by Laurie Pessemier  100 for the group HOUSEKEEPING:  We make art to order, including portraits by Blair Pessemier.    Follow us on Instagram @lauriepessemier See all of our painting at https://paintfox.com Most of our work is available as reproductions, custom sized and framed.   sign up for Artnotes, our weekly art missive, by contacting me at lfpessemier@gmail.com or https://mailchi.mp/341f508cecf8/artnotes INVITING All Artists to present their Work:   Paint, Literature, Crafts, Food.... Artnotes: A Rakish Angle

Fall Trees Blair Pessemier  acrylic/canvas   20  x 8"    50 x 20 cm   395.00 I hope your week has been good.  We just volunteered to do cat and dog murals outside our vet’s office.  I find retirement (or whatever not having a regular schedule is) very boring and I continuously look for (crazy) projects.   Berlino, of course, is the inspiration for the dog, and a fat black and white cat sits in the nook on the other side of the door.   We opted to paint in acrylic, with some oil pastel accents.

At the Vet's place... We covered up our scrimshaw show (I just couldn’t erase it) with 5-foot-tall tree paintings.  We added some smaller tree paintings, as well, and I am pressing fall leaves for a mobile.  No, we rarely sell anything there, but I know people like it because they leave little gifts, like, this week, a folder of impressionist prints.   I can’t wait all my life for people to buy my paintings, galleries to hang them or just the right situation.  Blair and I are working on an architectural competition together.  Contrary to the robust discussion the neighbors are hearing, it isn't a double burial tomb.   It’s the redo of a bombed out church just outside of Bologna, in Settefonti.  It is a site of a castle from 1105, which was on a key road from Bologna to Arezzo – the Romanesque church first appeared in the 14th century, and was restored in the 17th.   It had the misfortune to be on the “Gothic” line during WWII and was destroyed except for a bell tower and part of the façade.   “ReuseIT” is an international organization which rehabs sites like these, mostly in Italy, and to whose call we are responding to.    We are going to the Venice Architectural Biennale next week for further inspiration.  We’re all staying overnight in an apartment near Palladio’s Villa Malcontenta. This isn’t a project we have to follow through with a construction team – it is just a competition for an idea of what to do, with a modest prize for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Artnotes: Come for Dinner!

He started showing me things, and then he started to cry.  I selected a mop head and a handful dust rags.   He apologized, saying he hadn’t slept the night before – worrying about Ga za.  “Children,” he cried, “who have never even lived, starved to death or killed by bombs.”  I tried to comfort him, but knew he just had to say what he felt.  He told me he was twenty-five, and just couldn’t bear the thought of war.  I told him war was just for soldiers and he said no, it’s not for anyone.  He had been living in Bergamo, 100 miles north of here, and comes down with a group of North African immigrants to sell things door-to-door.  He and his fellow peddlers sleep in the car.   I gave him a large bag of shelled walnuts, and added three pairs of socks to my stash.  I poured him a glass of water and paid twenty euros for my purchases.

It was that kind of bittersweet week for us.   We did some favors for friends, and drove around a lot.  To be able to give in friendship is a big honor, and I feel happy when I help out.  It is never exactly like we plan, there are odd twists, negative and positive.   On one escapade, we went to a Moroccan store, where we bought rice.  “This is the rice my family eats,” the chubby Moroccan told us.  “Well, it must be good then,” I say.  Blair notices the soft Moroccan flat bread, like we used to buy in Paris. Artnotes: Jam

The weather finally “broke” this week:  one day swimming, the next day making jam over the hot stove.   We managed to glean a bunch of figs from our tree, stole rosemary from the neighbor’s yard and made a delicious concoction.  We also bought peaches for just one Euro a kilo (2.2 pounds), and turned them into jam as well. The Fish Bowl with Salvador Dali  Blair Pessemier   Acrylic/canvas  8 x 20" 20 x 50cm 390.00 We had to call in intervention this week for the unicorn traipsing around in our attic.   I felt lucky to get the figs before, like the sloes and apples, were completely gone.   Giorgio was able to get into the attic and block off two really large entry holes.  Animal identification is still a question. Matisse's Goldfish    Blair Pessemier   Acrylic/canvas  8 x 20" 20 x 50cm 390.00 It continued to be a homely week, with trips to doctors and such.  Berlino had another leg injury which we have managed, so far, to treat ourselves.  Blair visited our new doctor, in Vignola.   The doctor was outside the office, using the leaf blower, when we arrived (alas, the chestnut trees are casting off leaves).   This seemed somehow endearing, that he wasn’t just sitting at his desk, playing with his stethoscope and turning his headlight on and off. Part of his appeal is he doesn’t wear a white coat.   We went in (we were early) and the waiting room, shared by the other doctors, was nearly full of patients who seemed stiff and unmoving, like a setup to look busy (no one was summoned while we were there). One fellow resembled a ticket taker on a train, with a sharp, brimmed hat, double breasted jacket and gnarly fingers.  We both wanted to take a picture, but thought it impolite.
