Artnotes: Leftovers

On Wednesday, we ate the last of our Easter Lamb in North African spices.  It was its third incarnation, this time with blood oranges and red onions; olives and lemon and a touch of basalmic vinegar: over pasta.  It was delicious – and something I would have been unlikely to make from “new” ingredients.

I do the same with paintings – the Tasmanian Tiger commanded a large canvas I originally thought would be a scene of shooting stars.  It was awful (we all have failures); then I thought I’d reuse the canvas for the extinct marsupial.  Voila!

Repurposing is the more up-to-date term for all the things that find a second life around our house.  We reinvent ourselves in much the same way.  Going forward, using the skills and some of the materials we’ve accumulated along the way.

We haven’t been to the USA for nearly five years.  We purposely took a year off in 2019, after my father passed the year before (I made 4 trips in late 2017 - 2018).  Then came Covid, and now we have had less money.   But more than anything, I want to use this last phase of my life to GO FORWARD.   People will just have to visit us here.

With the Art Residency in France earlier this year, I realized how much more I could paint.  And with our new gallery opening in May, we can show and talk about our work to other people.   So when someone asked if they could visit us at the end of August, I said “sure!”  We’ll be here.

In Stimigliano, there is a reinvention of the Borgo.  People from Australia, England, India, Austria and Germany have moved in, and the old guard is waning.  Some of the new people all around us are wishing for a restaurant in the borgo.  Two of the new neighbors are offering bed and breakfast accomodations,    They asked if we’d be interested in doing a home restaurant.  I said I didn’t think so – I am not a spring chicken, more like a cold leftover.  But who knows?  Maybe one night a week.
