It’s August in Italy, the best time of year here. The sun has given up its unrelenting position directly overhead, and shadows are visible again. Everyone is in a happy mood because of vacation. Little “festa”s are held in even the teensiest of towns – there are evening dinners under the stars from the 12-15 August in Roccamalatina. August 15 is the highlight of the month of August, but festivities continue until early September.

We have the doors open to our gallery, as does the fellow next door, selling his late mother’s artwork. A big crowd of non-buying old Italian men congregate outside his shop. I guess it gives the sense of activity, but to the trained eye: no. We try to maintain an open and congenial storefont for interested customers. I am not 100 percent optimistic, but it’s an enjoyable outdoor diversion and it can’t hurt to add beauty to Roccamalatina.
Berlino likes hanging with the old men next door – they are not a good influence on him and he misbehaved in the restaurant last night, sidling up to a woman who was eating cinghiali (wild boar). He still hasn’t forgiven us for banishing him to the car.

The weather has cooled off here, and we had a comfortable walk through Modena this week. We dropped off a poster at the frame shop. Summer is a time of no business in the city, and merchants try to get away if they can. The framer is thinking about getting involved in NFTs (cyber art). We take it as a bad sign; plus, he’s now renting out the windows he used to let his clients fill for free. He is such a good and creative framer, we will try to send more business his way.

I am painting flowers, one of my favorite subjects – they could look good in the right frame.
