We are in the throes of summer guests. They help us see things we might have otherwise overlooked. This was the case last weekend.
In search of nearby, not too strenuous activities, I happened upon a museum in Ponzano Romano, the town just across the Tiber from Stimigliano. Not only was it a museum, but it was a modern art gallery, In this town of 1,100 inhabitants.

When we arrived it was evident that this was no regular Sunday. There were young marching musicians and men dressed in red and white medieval garb. It was the feast of St. Sebastian, the patron saint of Ponzano Romano. Ebroidered red and white decorations were extremely fine, and statues of the saint abounded.
In Ponzano Romano
After some car-juggling, we found the museum: closed. There was a number to call, and eventually, the most charming man came to let us in. He was an artist himself, and a celebrated cinematographer. After an inspection of the show (works of David Bowes -- contemporary, positive, interesting) the museum opener then invited us to his house to see his own work.

It was one of those “pinch me” moments in which remarkable things happen. We sat beneath arbors on the porch of his villa and drank fizzy water. He had other artworks besides his own covering the walls. He had painted the rooms to incorporate fragments of former decoration. Later,he brought us to see an installation piece in another part of the museum further down the hill. The room was part of a hospital and chapel, from hundreds of years earlier.,

We packed back into the car and drove to lunch. It was a hard act to follow, and we’re always grateful for those magic times.
