Artnotes: A Bigger Pool

Wow, did I miss everyone who reads Artnotes last week.  Artnotes has been a critical part of my persona since 1998.  Yes, 25 years of artnotes x 52 weeks a year = 1300 episodes.  “Did you paint anything for Artnotes this week?” I ask Blair.

We have had many guests this month.   An enjoyable, if sometimes exhausting, event.  Some guests are easier than others.   A weekend visitor two weeks ago not only removed her used sheets, but made the bed with fresh ones!!  “My mother-in-law does this,” she announced, “and I thank her so much.” I will remember it.  The biggest thing I notice with guests is their circadian rhythm: most guests don’t wake until well into the morning. I actually prefer that, so I can get early morning projects done and walk Berlino, sit with my cup of tea.  I can fit my whole workday in between 5:30 and 10 AM and then I am free to do nothing.  Night life isn’t my strong suit.

This week, we visited a friend who rented a house in Italy.  It is one of those enormous Tuscan villas with graveled paths, and a living room which would contain my entire Stimigliano apartment.  The arched doors are 12 feet high, opening up all the way – the ceilings inside are 20 feet tall.  The amazing thing is that there is a coziness to the place – unlike some French chateaux, or British houses of similar size.   Hats off to the decorator and those Medici who were involved in its construction.

We spent our time alongside the pool, with Berlino (he’s not allowed inside the building).  He found an old wooden ball he chewed on for our 3 hour visit.  There was a special house to change into swimsuits, and butterfly-dotted lavender bloomed all around.  It was terrific.  Our friend’s idea was much the same as ours:  have a big beautiful place (I think she has 10 bedrooms) and people will WANT to come. A maid and gardener, of course.  Her family from brothers and sisters to grandchildren enjoyed it.

Hemlock Lodge, our beloved summer home, was a little like that, but the designation of vacation house is where the similarity stopped.  We did have a bigger pool (Highland Lake).  Welcome summer.
