Artnotes: The Secret Weapon

We are in France for our painting residency this month.  Check us out on Instagram @maisonsimon.art or https://instagram.com/stories/maisonsimon.art/3035898184698596841?utm_source=ig_story_item_share&igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
Sketch of Berlino and Blair along the river
“Where’s Berlino?” Blair asked.  Just then, Blair noticed Bernie’s goofy smile beaming at him THROUGH the fence.

Walk slow, don’t chase.  Well, so much for that approach.  To chase Berlino is like chasing a departing bus – but he’s much faster than a bus.  He’s not a Ferrari, but at least an Alpha Romeo. He can beat a Fiat paws down.   30+ miles an hour, sustained.

He took the grassy route across the field, then up the hill where the fuzzy horse lives.  Blair pursued.  I did too, but with less vigor.  No way I’ll catch him.  After fifteen minutes or so, I announced I was going home for the secret weapon:  hot dogs.

Luckily, there were at least a dozen left over from our sauerkraut dinner on Saturday.  I rushed back to the last place we saw Berlino.  The two buffoons working on our gate thought, “look at those two buffoons”.   I suspected it was they who let him out the gate.

I climbed up into the copse of trees (having lived in the country I know the difference between real woods and a little group.)  Nothing.  I tore my hands on prickers and errant barbed wire.  Berlino has a thornproof coat.  I came back down, sweaty and bleeding.

“Want a hotdog?” I asked Blair.  We stood there munching, in the setting sun.  Suddenly, thundering hooves came over the ridge.

We let Berlino walk home on his own, close to the remaining hotdog.  He tried to get back into the yard through the hole in the fence.   We made an early dinner of hot dogs and sauerkraut and all cuddled up close together in the bed.
