Artnotes: Another Lifetime

We spent this week in Stimigliano, to the slight dismay of Berlino.  By way of a peace offering, we went to the beach at Santa Severa, where the sun was shining.   We walked miles on the sand stopping only to dig big holes.   Despite wearing my bathing suit, the surf was just too strong to swim, and a nearby restaurant had its red flag (no swimming) flying.  Harika, our last dog, is buried in these waters, and I like to stop by for the occasional chat and assurance that I am living my life right.  We bought colorful sunhats from the lone Bangladeshi set up on the path to the beach – he was a poor salesman and we might have been his only customers of the day.  Blair bought a khaki model with a flowery pink interior and I got saffron and black one.  We both love hats.

I can’t believe what a difference the sun makes.  This morning at coffee, men were visiting with one another in the parking lot at the Zanzibar.  Italians will stop to greet one another anywhere, and chatter away until the problems of the world float down the sewer hole; or at least until they’re up to date on the latest gossip.   Berlino is always greatly admired at these gatherings and I can tell he wishes he were part of the conversation.

An American staying in town wandered down to our house on Friday.  It had a “memorial day” feel for me as we hashed over Seattle (where she is from, too) and the many changes there.  I can slip into the comfort of chatting American at the drop of a hat.
I was in touch with an Italian friend for car advice. I am always so thrilled that someone wants to help – it makes both of us glad.  He gets to offer his expertise, and I am the joyful recipient.  I think I never used to be so open to advice, either – I am no longer a young know-it-all.

Stimigliano is at the brink of big construcAnotion work, with the bridge to the borgo, where we live, being replaced.  It was the sight of an old drawbridge, but all the up to date utilities are hidden in the wooden structure, about to fall down (this is part of why we have such limited internet service).   The bridge is the only car access to the town, and the idea of it being out of commission is worrisome.  I can’t imagine how we will carry groceries to our house, or transport Berlino in a thunderstorm.   And there is the fact that lots of Italy has partially finished projects that fall by the wayside – we could be marooned.

The most beautiful property in town is for sale – a large part of the Orsini castle, including the chapel and terrace.  It is expensive, but would make the most wonderful restaurant – Michelin style.  There are so many things I’d love to do, I need another lifetime!    Here’s the place:  https://www.immobiliare.it/annunci/110618971/     if you make it to photo 23, that’s the bridge I refer to.
