Artnotes: Daffodils and Snow

We drove to Roccamalatina on Sunday last, (me) not being able to tolerate the street construction in front of our Stimigliano apartment.  I can’t stand un-orderliness.  I am pretty tolerant of wildness in people or dogs, but my home is my orderly castle. NO RENOVATION is my mantra.

So we’re up North, where it snowed last night.  At first, Blair thought it was petals on the ground, but no, it was the white stuff.  In proper dog fashion, Berlino is THRILLED with his first snow, and he was unusually rambunctious this morning.

Berlino is a bit if a challenge, due to his size and youthful energy (it turned out he’s 2, not 3, as the shelter said). Not to mention he’s a boy dog.  We have had two long term girl dogs, and they had a clearly different postures.   Berlino is just aware of his big clown-y self, and sometimes doesn’t notice the finer points in life, and falls into drains, or gets tangled up in shrubbery.   He broke the leash again yesterday, trying to zoom around the yard, and catapulted into the air and remained airborne until he ran off.  I tried to casually pursue him, ho-hum (the books say, do not chase your dog).  Sure enough, after 10 minutes he reached a fenced corner, and we made up, my heart pounding so hard it might be heard a yard away.

Blair and I, like most couples, have different parenting styles.  Blair keeps Berlino close and uses his voice to keep him under control.  I smell Berlino’s Frito-paws, and scratch his dirty belly.  We kiss.  He is irresistible to me, and I know about the short life of pets and people and make the best of every day.  I am secretly pleased when he breaks free, and even more thankful he returns.
I was hoping to be planting flowers this weekend, but the snow put the kibosh on that.  We have a painting workshop, hip hip hooray, down south in April, so planting will wait until May.   Maybe Berlino will stop digging by then.
