A Project to
Reconstruct Claude Monet’s
Floating Atelier
Reconstruct Claude Monet’s
Floating Atelier
Renoir
Last fall we went to an exhibition in Rouen, of impressionist paintings of water called Dazzling Reflections.
Some of the pictures were painted from Claude Monet’s
floating studio, which was also reconstructed, in part, at the exhibit. There were pictures of Monet’s painting boat,
as well.
This triggered an idea:
Why not build a boat like Monet’s?

The Boat
Of course, our boat will be slightly more up-to-date than
his oar-powered craft. We’ll include an
electric motor so we don’t float away to Rouen. There will be a portable potty, life
preservers and lights in case we stay out late.
We will begin with a flat bottomed craft, to minimize
rocking, of about 6 meters, or 19 feet.
Then we will construct, on top, a covered section, with doors at both
ends. We’ll add a motor and a striped
awning.
And easels, paints and a little red wine.

Painting en Plein Air
We get wonderful feedback from people who paint with
us: “I have never felt more relaxed, even with a
massage”, or “painting at Giverny was the highlight of our vacation”, or most
recently from a group of six teenagers: ….”the power and joy of art can touch
all humankind. Thank you for helping us
find that truth.”
Well, if painting around town can produce this kind of
happiness, imagine what painting on our boat could do.

About Blair and Laurie
Blair and Laurie Pessemier
are American “en plein air” painters living in Paris. They paint a painting a day, at least when weather permits.
They also paint with other
people, mainly tourists, who want to experience painting in Paris.
We paint at the Seine, in the
Luxembourg Gardens, Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh painted, and Giverny.
